Welcome to the YouConomy.
It’s the new economy that’s centered around you.
You might think the YouConomy is way out in the future, but the truth is it’s here right now and it’s impacting you today. It’s already shaping your future and what you are able to do (and not do) with your career.
How? What is the YouConomy? And what can you do about it so you have the most control and freedom over what you can do with your career and life?
Work Today
It’s getting harder and harder for companies to find and retain talent. You’re in demand as a highly skilled professional.
And with 34% of the total workforce being freelancers these days (expected to be 50% by 2020), we know it – talent is leaving the corporate world in droves.
But we don’t know it well enough.
Still too many of us are struggling with jobs we hate and feeling stuck and hopeless, wishing for a career change that we believe is impossible.
But why?
If you are skilled and talented, why are you still stuck in a job you hate?
You don’t want to be treated like a robot. You want flexibility, kindness, and a chance to be challenged and to do work that connects with who you are.
On the flip side, companies want workers who can think for themselves, who take on their work like it’s their own responsibility, and who have personality traits that make them indispensable.
It’s not about your skills and experience anymore as much as it is about who you are and what you can learn – and that’s because information is changing so fast no one can keep up – your skills and experience are already obsolete.
The YouConomy
The YouConomy, as I said, is already here. In the past the deal was that you would give your job loyalty in exchange for the security they provide you – but it doesn’t work that way anymore.
In the YOUConomy, the individual worker is the resource and we are all behaving according to our own self-interests.
There has been a lot written about what the freelance movement means for the workforce as a whole and how it will shape the future. But what does it actually mean for you, the worker?
Whether or not you decide to become a freelancer, here’s the bottom line: Companies already (and increasingly) have voided the social contract of loyalty=security. It is not something you can or should count on if you want to stay in control of your own life.
But when you are able to shift your thinking and embrace the YouConomy, you realize that you have the power to dictate your working conditions, including the companies your choose to work for, the projects you choose to take on, the kind of work you want to do, and the work/life balance you want to have.
The YouConomy puts YOU in charge of your career again, rather than a company or a boss that doesn’t care about you.
